Stunning Sunset at Elk Island National Park
Updated: Jan 3
About 50km east of Edmonton on the Trans Canada HWY 16 is a beautiful national treasure called Elk Island National Park. While I have visited this park before for sightseeing, recently I have been going there to capture the beautiful sunset the park has to offer. There are couple of lakes in this park, the best known is Astotin Lake. Most of the visitors come at this lake to enjoy the sandy beach. On the south shore there is a pathway which leads to a boarded walkway which has been flooded due to excessive rain. But that created a nice sanctuary for birds as you will notice in some of the pictures.
There is a lot do at Elk Island. The best part for the photographer is the sunset at Astotin Lake. The sunsets captured here are in late August. I have heard that the winter sunset will provide a different view. Hope to capture that this winter. You could capture sunsets well into the hour after the sunset. Other than the sunset at the Edmonton River Valley's certain spots, the best sunset close to Edmonton is hands down at Elk Island National Park.
If you haven't enjoyed the Elk Island sunset, I highly recommend it and should be on your bucket list.
